Legal aid in Scotland is a public funding system that helps people pay for legal advice, assistance, and representation in civil and criminal court cases and tribunals. The Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) manages legal aid through a network of solicitors who are registered to provide legal assistance. The majority of legal aid funds are spent on legal services from private practice solicitors who are paid on a case-by-case basis.
You can only apply for legal aid through a solicitor that does legal aid work.
A solicitor will:
You will usually need to show that you can’t afford to pay for legal help yourself and your problem is serious.
You may have to pay some money towards the legal costs of your case, or pay costs back later.
You may not need to pay anything at all, depending on your financial position and the type of legal help you need.
